Methods of expression in urban beautification

"Methods of expression in urban beautification" a book by Mohsen Saraji.

"Methods of expression in urban beautification" is a scientific reference to familiarize artists and academia to urban arts and different ways to express art in urban spaces.

This scientific reference book is based on the introduction of various ways of expressing artistic works in urban beautification, which is written by Mohsen Saraji and will be published in winter of 2023 by Sokhan Gostar Publication. The target audiences of this book are academics, art directors and urban artists who by reading this book, in ten chapters, will be familiar with different approaches such as permanent sculptures, temporary sculptures, wall paintings and carvings, enclosures designs, digital art, urban decoration, urban lighting, theme parks and many more.

In the foreword of the book, Mohsen Saraji writes: A city is a place where mobility, continuity and development are its prominent features; a space where artistic landmarks are considered as elements of city's identity. Many cities in the world are recognized by these symbols. All those ancient glorious cities in history had a collection of monuments, statues, fountains and works of art in squares, passages and public places. Elements that their harmony and proportion have made urban environment more attractive, and were the linking factor between human and the environment.

Therefore, addressing the role of artworks in urban spaces, in addition to representing the urban identity and strengthening the dynamics of the city, demonstrate an increase in citizens’ satisfaction level to their city managers who used art as a tool to invite people to public spaces and increase happiness and empathy of citizens.

In addition to satisfying the aesthetic need of citizens, urban arts turn urban spaces into urban areas with a sense of belonging. Providing opportunities for people's presence in the city, reforming citizenship culture, teaching religious beliefs, representing individual nostalgias, increasing visual literacy, improving citizens' morals, creating an attractive, energetic and uplifting environment are some other results of urban arts.

He adds: Undoubtedly, providing a contemporary interpretation of art in urban spaces and setting a desirable vision, requires extensive study of social records, detailed examination of artistic elements, teamwork experience with professionals, and detailed planning of strategies and stages of executing art projects. Despite the formation of specialized institutions in cities that are responsible for management and direction of urban art, we have yet to witness a long-term strategic document to manage such flows. Before preparing such documents, it is necessary for artists and city managers to familiarize themselves with more comprehensive definitions of applied art in city. This reveals the necessity of using artistic creative ideas based on specialized knowledge in urban management.

Mohsen Saraji is the director of Saraaj; the Center for Development and Creation of Art Spaces, who has previously translated David Younger's "Fundamentals of Theme Park Designing" book. Moreover, he has experience in beautifying projects in cities such as Mashhad, Bandar Abbas, Kish Island, Yazd, Bushehr and the tourist town of Namak Abroud.
