Designing a digital experience in the educational system

Mohsen Saraji – Thematic Designer and Creative Director

In the era of digital transformation and experiential education, designing educational systems is not limited to traditional classrooms and teaching content. The digital experience in education means simultaneously integrating physical and digital environments to create an active, collaborative, and multi-sensory learning experience. This approach can transform schools and educational spaces in the country into a thematic educational park where every student, while learning, engages in practical and game-based experiences.

The Digital Experience Design Framework in Education

Four main stages are considered for designing a digital experience:

Pre-experience: Before entering the classroom or space, the student is introduced to digital content, interactive games, and learning applications to prepare his mind for the active experience. This stage is like a preview of a theme park that strengthens curiosity and motivation.

Entry threshold: The moment a student enters the learning space determines their emotional state and level of motivation. The design of the environment with lighting, color, physical and digital elements, and sound creates an engaging and different experience and prepares the student’s mind for active participation.

Learning experience path: The main learning path includes a combination of physical activities, interactive games, digital simulations, and augmented reality environments that engage the student in multisensory experiences. Each thematic zone or section can focus on a skill or concept and engage the student in active interaction and practical participation.

Post-experience and consolidation of learning: After the activities are completed, spaces for review, feedback, and collective learning are provided so that the student can consolidate their experience and connect it to real life. Digital tools and applications allow for progress tracking, supplementary learning, and content re-creation.

Key Parameters for Designing a Thematic Digital Experience

To create an effective digital experience and active learning, the design focus should be on interaction, play, student participation, and the use of digital software and media:

Active interaction with the environment and media: Students in each zone engage with physical tools and interactive software such as simulations, educational apps, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). These interactions allow for hands-on learning, experimentation, and direct experience of concepts.

Digital gaming and educational challenges: Digital game-based activities and staged challenges in software increase student motivation and engagement, turning learning into an interactive and experiential journey.

Social engagement and teamwork: Digital experiences with media tools enable group collaboration, discussion, and shared decision-making, and strengthen social and problem-solving skills.

Instant feedback and adaptive learning: Digital software and platforms offer real-time feedback, personalization of the learning experience, and alternative learning paths so that students can experience and consolidate their interaction with content.

Media and space integration: Signs, QR codes, and digital elements in the physical environment align the learning experience with the content of software and media, making the learning process integrated, engaging, and multisensory.

Benefits of thematic digital experience in the education system

Thematic digital experience has several benefits for students, teachers, and the education system:

Enhancement of active and participatory learning: Instead of passively receiving content, students play an active role in the learning process.

Development of new skills: Teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking, and digital skills are enhanced through practical experience and digital simulations.

Increasing motivation and engagement: Combining games, challenges, and multisensory experiences makes students interested in learning and makes the learning experience enjoyable.

Aligning with the digital future: Digital experiences introduce students to new technologies and prepare them for future work and life environments.

Challenges and policy

Implementing digital experiences requires attention to appropriate infrastructure and policy:

Digital infrastructure and equal access: Schools must be equipped with the necessary tools and technologies so that all students can benefit from the experience.

Teacher empowerment: Teachers need training and support to guide digital experiences.

Adapting content to digital experiences: Educational content should be designed in a way that integrates with digital and physical environments and creates a meaningful learning experience.

The digital experience in the country's education system, with a thematic approach and experience-based design, creates a multi-sensory, interactive and active learning journey for the student beyond mere learning. This experience strengthens motivation, participation and new skills and guides the education system towards flexibility, educational equity and alignment with future technologies. Simply put, the digital experience transforms education from a mode of content transfer to an interactive and experience-based educational park in which the student is not just a learner, but also an explorer and active actor in learning.
