Surna Player

The presence of signs and symbols that play an essential role in the customs and traditions around Nowruz is very important and influential in the design of (urban) elements for spring. Rituals and traditions that existed in the past but with the expansion of cities and their inevitable impacts have gradually faded away. One of these symbols and signs is the playing of Surna (a special kind of trumpet) during spring and Nowruz. Surna player is a person who used to play certain genre of music after New year and go to streets in order to intensify the vitality of spring.

One of the functions of urban design is to restore these symbols so that they are not forgotten any longer. To meet the needs of the beautification strategy of Mashhad, with this concept in mind, we determined to design Surna player statue and place it in Mashhad's Bo-Ali Square. An abstract-figure statue which is 5 meters high, made of two mm iron sheets using the direct modeling technique. The design and idea of this work was done by Mr. Mohammad Reza Molanuri and its creation was done by Mr. Ayub Amani Babaei and Mohammad Reza Heydari.
