Farabazi’s billiards and darts area connects game layouts, dedicated lighting and shared services in one environmental design. This SARAAJ portfolio project considers leisure in relation to movement, pauses and spatial identity.

The game of billiards is an engaging sport with a dedicated following. It developed from outdoor play into an indoor table game, with green cloth recalling its origins on grass. We designed the billiards and darts area at Farabazi in Ghahramanan Amusement Park across 172 square metres.

The original article describes billiards as having reached Iran through Russian and British influence. Before the Iranian calendar year 1342, it was associated with relatively limited circles, including retired military personnel and artists. It subsequently spread to public venues and sports clubs. The establishment of Iran’s Bowling and Billiards Federation in 1380 helped formalise the sport, which has since gained a wider following among young people.

Farabazi’s billiards area contains four tables: one snooker table and three eight-ball tables. Individual lighting above each table was used to create the distinctive atmosphere of the game. The darts area has four lanes; the project description gives a player-to-board distance of 2.60 metres. A dedicated counter serves the billiards, darts and climbing areas and was designed in response to both the billiards setting and the destination’s overall theme.

The fragmented lines and forms of the internal wall beside the billiards and darts area were inspired by the irregular movement of billiard balls.

We also provided convenient access to the nearby coffee shop, aiming to create an environment that different members of the family could enjoy.
