Urban Installations: Their Importance, Materials and Design

An urban installation is a structure or artwork placed in public space that combines practical uses with aesthetic and cultural qualities. Installations can take many forms, including sculptures, fountains, timber or metal structures, calligraphic paintings and graphic artworks.

Creating installations in cities offers several benefits, including:

Beautifying urban space: Installations can improve the appearance of public spaces and make them more engaging places to live and visit.

Strengthening cultural identity: Urban installations can express a city’s culture and history and help reinforce its identity.

Creating social vitality: Different types of installation can bring enjoyment and encourage interaction between residents. Interactive works, for example, can engage and entertain people directly.

Urban Installations by Material

A range of materials is used to make urban installations. Common options include:

Stone: A traditional, durable material for public installations.

Metal: Used in sculptures and fountains, or combined with timber in mixed-material structures.

Wood: A natural, visually appealing material used for sculptures, benches and timber or mixed-material structures.

Concrete: A widely used, durable material for urban installations.

Important considerations in creating urban installations include:

Suitability for the setting: The work should relate to its surroundings. The cultural and geographic context is a central consideration in design.

Safety: The design should protect residents from hazards associated with the installation.

Durability: Materials should be robust enough to resist environmental damage.

Ease of maintenance: The installation should be designed so it can be maintained readily.

The Future of Urban Installations

The creation of urban installations has grown in recent years as cities have placed greater importance on public-space quality and cultural identity. Future development may involve new, more inventive materials and closer attention to practical and cultural roles. As public art grows in importance, opportunities for creativity in design and fabrication also expand.

SARAAJ Art Space Creation and Development Center had been designing and producing urban installations at a high level for nearly fifteen years at the time of the original article. Across Iran, from Namak Abroud to Kish, and from Yazd to Mashhad and Isfahan, as well as many other cities, SARAAJ has designed and delivered distinctive, contemporary public artworks and installations, maintaining an active role in Iranian urban art.

As technology and artificial intelligence develop worldwide, we hope to keep advancing urban installations and public-art practice in Iran alongside leading companies in the field.
